Natural Resource Governance Institute

BRIEF:

To create training videos on contract negotiation in the extractives sector (oil, gas, minerals) for an audience of practitioners, mainly in the Global South.

The Natural Resources Governance Institute is an NGO aimed at supporting countries with their management of natural resources, particularly in the Global South. Contract negotiation is one area they needed a specific course on.

We created an eight-part video course to support NRGI’s stakeholders and community. The course needed to be factually robust and engaging, featuring some key experts in the sector. The course was co-funded by the European Union and GIZ.

APPROACH

We worked closely with the client to understand the objectives of the course and the target audience. The NRGI experts led the presentations, while Econ Films was responsible for making the content work as an educational and audience experience, contextualising with archive footage and illustrating key points with dynamic motion graphics and animation.

Because of COVID-19, contributors were filmed remotely. We worked closely with the contributors in advance of recording to help them with this process, including the technical aspects to ensure the highest quality recordings. The style followed simple PowerPoint presentations, or generic as slideshow presentations that were then enhanced by our motion graphics and animation to make them more engaging and educationally clearer.

The Vensight team advised on the length of each video, how best to portray the key messages in a visual format, and ensure knowledge retention.

IMPACT

NRGI and its stakeholders and community were “very happy with the final results and would definitely work with them again in the future”.

“We hired Econ Films (now Vensight Learn) to work with us in the development of a short MOOC on Negotiating Extractive Industry Contracts, which is part of our online learning offering. The team was very responsive and adapted to our tight timeline and budget. We were grateful for their flexibility when scheduling recordings with experts in different time zones and with very busy schedules. There were additional challenges related to the pandemic restrictions, resulting in most experts recording from their homes with difficulties such as poor internet connections and bad lightning. The team was great in helping experts prep and adapting to these constraints to still deliver a high-quality product. They were always very open to our feedback and last-minute requests. We were very happy with the final results and would definitely work with them again in the future.”
